Big BOX in Bronzeville is an ambitious proposal for a mufti-level retail vertical mall constructed from shipping containers.
The proposed Four Level container mall utilizes 140 Boxes with plenty of open air and light. Small gathering areas are provided at each themed cluster. The Open Air Multi-Level Retail mall features a Big Box on the S/E Corner on the site. The walls of the Big Box are perforated and allow for sound and light to transmit.
Retail, Maker, Business, Fixed Food Boxes, Hospitality Boxes, Utility Service Boxes and Relaxation Boxes are provided. The themed service groups are clustered for a sense of community.
The ground floor is open allowing for short term retailers, gathering, performance and street vending. The Business box has its entrance on Calumet, and is connected to the mall at grade and the Sky Level (Third Floor).
Also, at the Sky Level are hospitality boxes and larger restaurants with outdoor terrace dining. An optional skylight is proposed for the roof level, to render a year-round experience. The portions of the Fourth Floor Level is used as an Urban Farm; complete for opportunities for hydroponics and artificial light farms.
The solar farm at the upper roof harvest energy from the sun. Wind energy generators and rain collectors are envisioned as well.
